West Ham United Football Club, commonly known as the Hammers or simply West Ham, is a professional football club based in East London. The club was formed in 1895 as Thames Ironworks FC, before being reformed as West Ham United in 1900. The Hammers moved from the Boleyn Ground at Upton Park in 2016 to the London Stadium, which has a capacity of over 60,000 spectators. The club’s record home attendance was set in 2022 when 62,449 watched West Ham take on Brighton. Over the years, West Ham United has won major trophies, including three FA Cups, one European Cup Winners’ Cup, and one Intertoto Cup. The club’s nicknames, the Hammers and the Irons, come from the club’s origins as Thames Ironworks FC, a team founded by the Thames Ironworks and Shipbuilding Company. West Ham has had its fair share of legendary players over the years, including the likes of Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst, Trevor Brooking, and Paolo Di Canio. Moore, the most famous of these, captained England to World Cup glory in 1966 and played over 600 times for the club. Interestingly, West Ham were the first team to be broadcast on television in the UK, in a game against Arsenal in 1938. At present their manager is David Moyes, and the club achieved its highest Premier League finish in over 20 years in the 2020-21 season, qualifying for the Europa League.
