Southampton Football Club was founded in 1885 and currently plays their home matches at St. Mary’s Stadium, which has a capacity of 32,505. The record home attendance for Southampton was set in 1949 when 31,044 fans watched them play against Derby County at their old ground The Dell. The team’s nickname is the Saints, which is a reference to the city’s history as a center of the Church of England. Southampton have won the FA Cup once in 1976 and have also reached the final of the competition three times. They have also won the Football League Trophy twice and were runners-up in the UEFA Cup in 1976. In addition, the club has won the Football League Championship (now known as the EFL Championship) once in 1960.  Southampton’s most famous players have been Bobby Stokes, Matt Le Tissier, who is considered to be one of the greatest players in the club’s history, Mick Channon, Kevin Keegan, and Alan Shearer. .Southampton is also known for being the club where legendary footballer Sir Bobby Charlton began his professional career. Additionally, the club is known for its youth academy, which has produced several talented players who have gone on to play for the first team and other clubs.
